Examples of signposting and referral

Scenario 1

Marcus is 27 and is completing a teaching and education course at the Training Brokers, he wants to continue with this at University when he has finished but he doesn’t know what he needs to do next.

Signposting

Marcus is provided with a number of brochures and telephone numbers for three Universities which he would be able to get to easily from his home. The IAG advisor suggest that he telephones the Universities to see what is on offer and what she needs to do next.

Referral

Each of the three Universities are contacted and an appointment is made at each for an informal interview to assess which course would be the best for Kerry. She is provided with the name of each person she will be seeing and appointment times. She is given materials including bus time tables of the services she will need to get her there.

Scenario 2

Rukshana has come from East Africa and she has a college qualification from her own country in nursing. She would like to find employment as a nurse in the UK she is not fluent in English.

Where would you Signpost Rukshana to and which organisations could she be referred to.

Think about your own organisation and when clients are signposted and/or referred. Think of an example to talk about in your unit assessment.
