Time Off In Lieu (TOIL) Policy

Your contracted hours are detailed within your terms and conditions of employment.

Our TOIL policy allows you to record and use TOIL for working additional hours; TOIL is granted and compensated on an hour-by-hour basis and is not really to be used for smaller time periods without express permission from a member of the Senior Management Team (SMT).

All job roles within TTB are designed to be completed within a set number of hours per week (contracted hours).  If your role requires you to work additional time on a regular basis this must be highlighted to a manager of SMT who will undertake a ‘Time and Motion Study’ to ensure your duties are achievable within your contracted hours.  Where the study identifies that a role requires regular additional hours TTB have 3 options:

1. Offer paid overtime

2. Employ another person to undertake the additional duties

3. Agree with you to extend your contracted hours

TOIL is not designed to allow you to accrue time (minutes, hours, days) in order to take time off at your convenience. TOIL is designed to compensate you for working additional time on business-critical tasks which require you to work beyond your contracted hours.

  • TOIL will only be available where required by an identified business need
  • All TOIL must be agreed in advance of working any additional hours
  • TOIL requests will not be approved in HR Online if it has not been agreed with a member of SMT prior to working the additional hours
  • TOIL must be used within the same month the hours were worked (with exception, a member of SMT may authorise for you to carry up to 4 hours into the next calendar month if this will not negatively impact the business
  • TOIL not used within month or approved for carry over will be lost on the last working day of the month
  • TOIL requests for less than 1 hour will only be granted if there is an exceptional business requirement
  • You will not be paid in lieu of accrued TOIL

The time of in lieu will be logged through BrightHr Lieu Bank.
